A template with the right orientation, column logic, and figure capacity is easier to adapt than one that only matches a colour preference. Count major evidence panels and confirm the ratio. Colour can change; mismatched information architecture often demands redesign.

Use styles as a system
Identify title, heading, body, caption, and reference roles, then edit them consistently. Preserve alignment guides while removing unused panels. A good adaptation should look intentional with fewer sections, not like a template with holes.

- Test theme colours in grayscale.
Audit the finished work
Templates save setup time but do not verify science, permissions, or export. Review copy, figures, contrast, distance, dimensions, and PDF behaviour. Remove hidden samples. If adaptation is harder than rebuilding, choose another structure.

- Open on the delivery computer.
- Retain a clean source copy.

A poster with one wide survival plot and two supporting charts should use a grid that grants the wide plot priority instead of forcing equal columns.
